First adjust the distance (x) between the stands (S1, S2) using the slider c2 (or using corresponding textbox). The position of the hook and the travelling microscope stand will be adjusted automatically with x
In this experiment, we need only vertical movement of the travelling microscope. So, using the slider c1, coincide the horizontal cross-wire of the microscope with the tip of the needle (n). The magnified view of the vertical scale is shown in image I3 (I2 is the microscope view). Record the reading in Table I.
Now put different weights (using dropdown button c3) on the weight holder (w) and record the corresponding readings in Table I. It is to be noted that, the holder is considered to be massless.
Plot depression (l) v/s load (M) graph. The graph should be straight line. Estimate the value of the Young's Modulus from the slope of the graph using the equation,
where, d and b are the thickness and breadth of the metal bar respectively. In this experiment d = 0.4 cm and b = 5 cm.
Repeat the entire procedure for different values of x and calculate Young's Modulus for individual cases.
The slider can be tuned by pressing the arrow buttons on keyboard.
